Winner: AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards

Back

Shelter From The Storm has won the Retrofit Revisited category in the 2026 AJ Retrofit & Reuse Award.

Originally completed in 2019, the project transformed a former supermarket in north London, into a year-round emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness.

The judges praised the quality of the transformation achieved on a tight budget, highlighting the hard-wearing yet intentionally domestic material palette, the warmth of the spaces and the care given to how the shelter works for its residents.

‘Material choices have been really key in creating what are really well-designed, empathetic spaces – and developed on a shoestring,’ said one judge. ‘A model in how you adapt and transform a space into a clearly welcoming one,’ said another.
